A panel of experts offered a somewhat overcast economic outlook Tuesday for the next several months, with rising unemployment and spiraling residential real estate pushing a recovery as far back as 2014.
“Fasten your seatbelts,” said finance and economics professor Allan Timmermann to an audience of approximately 55, including many former and current chief executive officers. “This is going to be very turbulent, and it’s going to last a long period.”

Once a month members of the Chairmen’s RoundTable, a nonprofit volunteer organization, meet at the Fish & Richardson offices in Carmel Valley. The group of retired CEOs with diverse industry backgrounds is unique in that it provides mentoring and business advice to private businesses in San Diego County– absolutely free. No catches! Except maybe that those fortunate to qualify for this service have to step up to the plate and do their part. The entrepreneur charged with turning his company around has to commit to investing his time and energy in studying his business, and agree to implement the suggested strategic changes.

Sitting around the massive ash conference table were more than 30 people who represented, and I am not exaggerating, a millennium of experience and knowledge. At least 1,000 years of practical, priceless information. Free for the asking. The instant question in my mind was, why aren’t entrepreneurs from far and wide lining up 10 abreast and 1 mile deep to take advantage of this incredible resource? If you were a budding business builder, risking many years of your life, many nights of lost sleep and most of your worldly assets, wouldn’t you want to learn from people who had succeeded, failed and succeeded again in the world of entrepreneurship?
